Visa operates a card payments network that connects banks, merchants and cardholders in most countries of the world. Banks issue Visa-branded credit, debit and prepaid cards, and Visa collects fees for authorising and settling the transactions that travel over VisaNet; it never lends money to cardholders itself. Fraud screening, tokenised wallet payments and cross-border money transfers are among its other services. Visa grew out of BankAmericard, a card programme Bank of America launched in 1958.
Visa Inc. is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker V. It is part of the Financial Services sector, in the Credit Services industry, and is based in San Francisco, United States.
